Dust Mite

It is the house dust mite waste or feces, and not the mites themselves, that triggers asthmatic and allergic attacks. Research has revealed this trigger is a microscopic protein in the mite excrement called Der p1.

Our Dust Mite Anti-Allergen compound is derived from naturally occurring extracts found in plants and trees.  It instantly deactivates the allergen Der p1. Eliminating this allergen is the initial priority because the  total eradication of the dust mite is virtually impossible.

Studies by doctors and universities demonstrated that when dust mite droppings are treated by the main active ingredient contained in our Dust Mite Anti-Allergen treatment, the allergens are physically changed, rendering them permanently harmless to people who display allergic symptoms to dust mite allergens.

Many of the rugs from certain rug-weaving countries around the world have dyes that tend to "bleed" or "migrate" into other areas of the rugs. This is a manufacturing defect. We will let you know, upon thorough inspection of your rug, whether or not a dye fix application is recommended.  This process applies a "mordant" or "dye control" to the colors and is applied before the cleaning to prevent bleeding of colors.

Another one of the special treatments for oriental and area rugs we use is a product called Microban X-580 for ridding textiles of many different types of live larvae contamination.  Microban X-580 is an all-natural insecticide extracted from chrysanthemum flowers and is safe for home and commercial use.  Microban protects your textiles against fleas, ticks, carpet beetles, body lice, moths and their larvae, cockroaches, bedbugs, flies, wasps, termites, silverfish, spiders, ants, hornets, pill bugs, mosquitos, mites, centipedes, firebrats, gnats, etc.

Only Microban X-580 offers a 3-way protection against the invisible invaders:  germs and odors.  Microban offers long-lasting residual protection against textile-destroying insects for 6 months.

For all your fine wool and silk rugs, we offer a method to retard the encroachment of moths.  There is no process that can permanently and safely protect against moths.  Our process makes the fiber unpalatable to the moths, thus "retarding" their attachment to that fiber.

ABC uses Microban Anti-Microbial for the purposes of sanitization.  This is very useful in rugs which have animal or human urine and feces for which, due to monetary or other reasons, full urine decontamination is not recommended.

The Microban will destroy bacteria in the pile of the rug and will have a residual effect that will continue to destroy bacteria for up to 6 months.  Please note:  in the case of urine, sanitization will NOT remove the odor.  Because the urine salts (dried microscopic urine crystals) cannot be removed without a special soaking process, bacteria will continue to feed on them. Sanitization merely slows down the process.  Please see Urine Decontamination below.

We highly recommend an application of soil and stain protector after any cleaning of rug fibers.  Spills will sit on top of the fiber for a period of time, but even after sinking into the fiber, they will not cause a permanent stain.

Urine, whether animal or human, poses many risk factors for rugs.  The urine odor signals bacterial action and the stains are unattractive.  The urine stains get darker and, over time, the very foundation of a rug can incur damage in the form of dry rot. Urine also attracts moths to feed on the protein fibers.

The byproducts of urine, urea crystals, CANNOT be totally removed by a cleaning process alone.  The crystals are microscopic and adhere to the foundation and fibers of a rug.  The urine odor is caused by bacteria eating those urea crystals and other bacteria eating those bacteria in an endless cycle.

This cycle is interrupted during drier times such as winter, but high humidity and high temperaturewill activate the bacteria and start the cycle, and the odor, again.

At ABC, we have developed a Guaranteed Urine Decontamination system that enables us to remove all urine odor (not stains) from any natural fiber rug that goes through the process. The odor is removed by eliminating the source of the problem (dissolving the urea crystals), not masking it with enzyme digesters or deodorizers.

Urine odor cannot be successfully removed from all area rugs.  Certain elements of the construction of some rugs prevent us from dissolving the urine crystals.  We are unable to treat area rugs with secondary backings such as broadlooms, or rugs with latex adhesive used to apply a secondary backing, such as in tufted rugs.  These adhesives do not release the urine once it has penetrated the rug.
